  1. they are demonstrating the refraction pattern characteristic of waves interfering with each other. it is sometimes called the two-slit experiment.  particles don’t create this pattern, only waves.  it was the experiment that proved that light has a wave characteristic.  prior to this, it was believed that light (photons) were particles.
